WORD OF THE WEEK


PROFOUND a. thoughtful, serious, intellectual.  Completing your homework and passing it in on time will have a profound effect on your grade!

DESCRIBE v. - Tell how something looks or happened using the five senses, including how, who, where and why. On last years MCAS Essay Test, seventh graders had to describe their favorite after-school hobby or activity.

ESSAY n. - a 5 paragraph writing assignment with an introduction, conclusion and 3 detail paragraphs. The 7th graders wrote a descriptive essay for the MCAS exam.

SOLSTICE n. - the longest and shortest days in any year ; the sun's greatest distance from the equator.      We experience the summer solstice in June and the winter solstice in December.

MOTIVATE v. - to move, propel or persuade. I need to motivate myself to do better in the second school term.

 ASPIRE v. to long for, aim , or seek ambitiously. Some students aspire to become great athletes.  

 ESSENTIAL adj.; necessary, extremely important. Water is essential for plants to grow.

Always a trend-setter, A Rod finds the perfect bag for carrying all the essentials to first base.

CONVEY v. - to communicate; express. Would you convey that message to Mr. Collins?

DIVERT v. - to change the direction of. Sally tried to divert the teacher's attention, but it didn't work!

GRATITUDE n.- a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation. Red Sox fans were filled with gratitude when the Red Sox won the World Series.

CONDENSED adj. - shortened; reduced; compact.  We read a condensed version of Homer's "The Iliad".

INFERENCE n. - a conclusion that can be made from a set of facts. Because it is snowing, an inference can be made that it is cold outside.
